The Chief of Police is appointed by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen. The Office of the Chief of Police carries out the general supervision of the department using an executive staff that consists of an Assistant Chief, and a civilian Administrative Assistant.

Within the agencies organizational structure are four major divisions.  These divisions are placed under the direction of an Inspector.  They are committed to providing a high level of specialized police services in support of overall operations of the Police Department.

The department's staff is currently made up of 117 full-time commissioned officers, 4 part-time commissioned officers, 39 full-time civilians, 4 part time court officers, 13 part-time civilians and 44 volunteers.

About Chief Lane

Chief Lane is a law enforcement leader with over 39 years of public safety experience. His career is marked by a deep-seated commitment to operational excellence and a strategic approach to community safety. He has dedicated over two decades to senior leadership roles, ensuring the safety of the Mid-South through rigorous standards and proactive partnerships.

Chief Lane’s career began in 1987 with the Millington Police Department before he joined the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office in 1989. Rising to the rank of Chief Inspector, he held pivotal command positions, including leading the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office S.W.A.T. Team, the Metro Gang Unit, and the Street Crimes Unit. His expertise in high-risk operations led to his appointment as the Director of Homeland Security and Emergency Management for Shelby County (2014–2018) and later as the Chief of Safety and Security for the Memphis Area Transit Authority (MATA).

Chief Lane served as an associate member of the Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) and was a member of the Governor’s Law Enforcement Counter-Terrorism Support Element. He has completed some of the industry’s most prestigious training:
• FBI National Academy Graduate (Session 226)
• U.S. Secret Service National Threat Assessment and Dignitary Protection Schools
• World Safety Organization Certified Safety Executive (2019)

Rooted in the belief that effective policing requires continuous education, Chief Lane holds a Master of Science in Operations Management from the University of Arkansas, a Bachelor’s in Organizational Management from Crichton College, and an Associate degree in Criminal Justice.

In 2025, he was honored with the prestigious H.R. Houston Award from Leadership Collierville. This accolade underscores his success in fostering a culture of trust and collaboration between the police department, local businesses, and residents. Today, Chief Lane continues to lead with an unwavering mission: to provide a safe, secure, and transparent environment for the entire Collierville community.
