Tennessee Safe Haven Law

The Tennessee Safe Haven Law, enacted on July 1, 2001 and updated July 1, 2025, provides a safe, legal, and confidential option for mothers who are unable to care for a newborn.

Under this law, a mother may surrender her unharmed baby who is 45 days old or younger without fear of prosecution for abandonment.

Where a Baby May Be Safely Surrendered

A mother may confidentially bring her newborn to staff on duty at any of the following locations:

  • Hospitals

  • Birthing centers

  • Community health clinics

  • Outpatient “walk-in” clinics

  • EMS facilities

  • Fire stations staffed 24 hours a day

  • Law enforcement facilities staffed 24 hours a day

The mother is not required to provide her name or any personal information.

Collierville Fire & Rescue – A Safe Place

All Collierville Fire & Rescue fire stations are designated Safe Haven Facilities under Tennessee law. Each station is staffed 24 hours a day and prepared to receive a baby safely, respectfully, and confidentially.

Firefighters are trained to provide immediate care and ensure the baby is transported safely for medical evaluation, while honoring the mother’s privacy and dignity.

You Are Not Alone

The Safe Haven Law exists to protect both infants and mothers during difficult moments. If you or someone you know needs this option, help is available—without judgment and without fear.

All Collierville fire houses are official Secret Safe Place Facilities:

  • Fire House 1 – 128 N Main St
  • Fire House 2 – 391 Old Byhalia Rd
  • Fire House 3 – 1241 Peterson Lake Rd
  • Fire House 4 – 2823 Houston Levee Rd
