Spring is here and more people are getting out to walk in their neighborhoods. Many will encounter muddy sidewalks or low tree limbs and overgrown landscaping obstructing the public sidewalks. It is the responsibility of homeowners and HOAs to maintain safe sidewalks along their property per Town ordinances (see below). This may require trimming trees and landscaping, or pressure washing sidewalks. The Town of Collierville wants to encourage all to ensure safe passage along their sidewalks with regular maintenance. Together we can continue to make our community a great place to live.  

Below are the Town Ordinances that apply to this particular property maintenance:

• §92.02 TREES PROJECTING OVER STREETS REGULATED. 

It shall be unlawful for any property owner or occupant to allow limbs of trees on his or her property to project out over any street, alley or sidewalk at a height of less than 14 feet. 

• §92.09 ABUTTING OCCUPANTS TO KEEP SIDEWALKS CLEAN. 

The occupants of property abutting on a sidewalk are required to keep the sidewalk clean. Also, immediately after a snow or sleet, such occupants are required to remove all accumulated snow and ice from the abutting sidewalk.  

• §10.99 GENERAL PENALTY. 

Any person, firm, partnership, corporation or other legal entity violating any of the ordinances of the Town shall be fined not more than $50 or the maximum amount permitted by state law, whichever is greater, for each offense, and a separate offense shall be deemed committed for each day of violation.
