Preventing a house fire and making an escape plan

Post Date:04/08/2022 4:53 PM

The first line of defense against a house fire is having a smoke alarm on each level of your home, as well as inside and outside of each bedroom.  If you can't afford the alarms, or need help installing them or replacing a battery, Collierville's fire department has you covered! Request help at:  https://www.colliervilletn.gov/government/town-departments/fire-and-rescue/contact-us/smoke-alarm-request

The second line of a defense is to make an escape plan just in case your house does catch fire. Make and rehearse a plan to:

  • Get out of the house! Have two exits from each room, like a door and a window.

  • Before opening a bedroom door, touch it quickly to test for heat. Flames could be right outside your door.

  • Crouch low as you leave if there is excessive smoke in the house.

  • Establish a meeting place outside for all family members, such as the mailbox or a tree that is a safe distance from the fire.

  • NEVER go back inside a burning house.

  • Make sure your plan includes who is designated to carry out small children or animals.
