The second line of a defense is to make an escape plan just in case your house does catch fire. Make and rehearse a plan to:
-
Get out of the house! Have two exits from each room, like a door and a window.
-
Before opening a bedroom door, touch it quickly to test for heat. Flames could be right outside your door.
-
Crouch low as you leave if there is excessive smoke in the house.
-
Establish a meeting place outside for all family members, such as the mailbox or a tree that is a safe distance from the fire.
-
NEVER go back inside a burning house.
-
Make sure your plan includes who is designated to carry out small children or animals.
