When is a fence permit required in Collierville? When you are:
building a new fence
rebuilding more than 50% of an existing fence
moving the location of your fence
changing the type of fence material
These are the cases in which you are required to get a permit through the Town of Collierville’s Development Department before beginning any work.
The fence permit application form contains a complete summary of the applicable Town standards for fences and should be consulted before doing work. The following are good rules of thumb that apply most cases whether or not a permit is required.
The maximum height for a front yard fence is 48” (4 feet). If the property is in the Historic District, the fence height is a maximum of 42”, is subject to review by the Design Review Commission or Historic District Commission.
The maximum height of a fence/wall within side and rear yards is typically 72” (6 feet).
All fences, regardless of type of material, need to have the finished side facing public right-of- way, common open areas, parkland or greenbelt areas, and other public areas.
If you have a swimming pool, the fence needs to have special design features to prevent small children from getting into the fenced area.
To apply for a fence permit, you must:
Fill out fence permit application form found on the Town’s website. You can submit the application in person or online. It usually takes less than one week to get a permit approved, and it is good for six months. If applying online, completed application forms must be uploaded. All pages need to be initialed/signed by the property owner or person constructing the fence. Property owners are encouraged to review and sign fence permit applications in addition to the fence contractor if someone else is building the fence for you, as the property owner is responsible if Town regulations or State laws related to alterations to storm water drainage flow are not followed.
Submit a plan showing the proposed fence location (can be a hand-drawing, plot plan, or aerial photograph)
Submit the permit fee. Residential permits have a $35 fee, while commercial permits are $50.
When planning a fence project, you are encouraged to work with your neighbors, especially when a fence is on a shared property line. Only a surveyor (not the Town) can determine the exact location of property lines and fences. Responsibly for sharing costs and ownership are a private matter between property owners and is not determined by the Town.
