Post Date:03/22/2022 10:23 AMThe Collierville Board of Mayor and Aldermen held a meeting with representatives from TDOT (Tennessee Department of Transportation) Monday, March 21, to talk about the litter problem on the highways connecting travelers to the Town of Collierville. The Board expressed their concern with the growing issue and discussed solutions to the problem.
Litter collection on Interstate 269 and State Route 385 are coordinated by TDOT. As of right now, TDOT contracts an outside company to pick up litter along these roads in the Collierville area once a month; in Memphis, TDOT coordinated collection occurs once a week.
The Board urged TDOT to increase the frequency of litter collection in our area and asked about the possibility of supplementing collection with Town contracted sources. The Board also discussed solutions including litter fine enforcement, more signage for litter fines, and the idea of a large-scale collection event.
Through multiple litter studies, the state discovered 100 million pieces of litter on Tennessee state roads, costing TDOT $19 million to clean it up every year.
Following this week’s meeting, the Board is going to decide next steps to get the gateways into Collierville cleaned up as soon as possible.
