Leadership Collierville recently spent their day at Town Hall learning about local government from those who run it every day.  

Mayor Stan Joyner talked about his years in leadership with the Town and shared with the class “the best government is closest to the people it serves” encouraging involvement in local government. The Mayor was also joined by Vice Mayor / Alderman Maureen Fraser and Alderman Missy Marshall.  

Shelby County Commissioner David Bradford visited the class and talked about his role in County Government. He also shared his leadership story and how he ran for office as a way to give back and serve his community. 

The class participated in a mock board meeting with volunteer Aldermen where they discussed a (fake) proposed ordinance regulating American flags. They even heard citizen comments!  

Mayor Joyner taught the group how the meeting is run and led board discussion about the topic. 

Public Works Manager Josh Russell is attending this year’s Leadership class and led a presentation about Public Works.  

“Public Works is the first to arrive and the last to leave. When a tree falls in the road, we get there first and will leave when the job’s done,” said Josh.  

Town Administrator James Lewellen closed out the day encouraging the class to pursue leadership opportunities and learn more about their elected officials and candidates running for office.  

“The Town cannot build a great community - it takes the citizenry to build a great community,” said James.
