Collierville has 18 miles of greenbelt trails for residents to enjoy by riding bikes, taking walks, or jogging through a neighborhood. 

These trails are meant for recreational use and are built to withstand that light traffic. When a motorized vehicle travels on a greenbelt trail, especially heavy equipment like a backhoe, the trail becomes damaged, unsafe, and costly. 

According to § 90.07 (D) in the Town’s Ordinances, “No person in a public park shall drive any vehicle on any area except paved park roads or parking areas or such other areas as may on occasion be specifically designated as temporary parking areas by the Parks and Recreation Department.” 

The greenbelt trails are a shared park amenity for everyone to safely enjoy and should not be used for contracted work or a cut-through at a private residence. Vehicles damage the trails and then pass the cost to repair on to the Town’s taxpayers. 

“We are currently experiencing the ‘ask for forgiveness and not permission’ scenarios related to the Town’s greenbelt trails. Residents are giving permission to contractors to use the trail and adjacent town owned areas to perform work upon their property rather than accessing their backyards via their property,” said Derek Honeycutt, Director of General Services.
