CAS Pet Adoption Success Story - Linda Cross & Ruby
Linda Cross was looking for a new buddy.
Cross is fighting cancer, and she’d recently lost her dog Pepper to an attack by some larger dogs. The experience was traumatic, and as she continued to go through cancer treatment, Cross knew that she would need companionship.
“There are some stray cats that hang around my house, and I tried to coax one of them into becoming a house cat,” said Cross. “But they weren’t having it. They are completely feral.”
Then a friend sent her a picture of Marshmallow, a solid white kitten living at the Collierville Animal Shelter.
“She has one blue eye and one green eye, and she is completely deaf,” said Cross.
Cross has had experience with deaf kittens in the past and she thought Marshmallow would make an excellent companion. That thought proved true.
“She’s been amazing,” said Cross. “But the name “Marshmallow” just didn’t roll off my tongue, so I renamed her Ruby.”
Ruby is about 6 to 8 months old, and as is the case with kittens, is “into everything,” according to Cross. She provides fun and laughter, which is just what Cross needed for her time of healing from the passing of her dog and her own ongoing battle with cancer. As an experienced pet mom, Cross knows how to deal with Ruby’s special circumstance – her deafness.
