Summer Boardwalk Renovation Project at Johnson Park Starts June 15

Post Date:06/01/2026 11:56 AM

The Town of Collierville has approved a construction services contract to replace a section of the Johnson Park boardwalk, with work scheduled to begin this summer. To ensure public safety during the active construction phase, the entire boardwalk will be closed to the public starting June 15, 2026.

The project focuses on replacing the oldest portion of the boardwalk, a 1,000-linear-foot segment built in 2000 that runs from the trailhead at the Nature Center to the overlook gazebo (pictured). While a newer section built in 2007 remains in acceptable condition, the original section requires significant replacement. By combining the project's heavy equipment needs and active construction zones, the entire boardwalk structure must be completely closed to park visitors until the project is finalized.

The project is funded through $454,000 previously allocated in the Fiscal Year 2024 Capital Improvement Program, with Nabholz Construction awarded with the contract for $429,512.46.

Public Works staff completed the design last year but strategically timed the construction for the late spring and summer months. Because the boardwalk sits within a sensitive wetland area, winter construction is highly restrictive. Shifting the work to the drier summer months provides the contractor with the optimal conditions needed to complete the project efficiently.

The contract allows for a 110-day timeline, setting a projected completion deadline of October 3, 2026. Town crews will place clear informational signage along the connecting primitive trail to notify hikers and runners of the boardwalk closure ahead.

Public Works Director Josh Russell noted that the project team is focused on moving the project along as quickly as possible.

"We are hopeful that it won't take that long," Russell said. "We are working to get the message out now so everyone who enjoys this trail will have plenty of notice before the closure begins."

The Town will provide regular updates on the project’s progress throughout the summer. Residents are encouraged to explore other available trails within the Collierville parks system during the construction period.
