Keep Leaf Piles Away from Water Meters

Loose leaf collection starts Nov 3rd.
Post Date:10/27/2025 9:33 AM

Loose leaf collection season starts November 3rd, and the Town is reminding residents to avoid placing leaf piles near anything that is not leaves, especially their water meters.

Public Utilities Director John Fox advises, "Avoid placing leaf piles on or near water meters. Doing so can block the meter’s antenna signal, and leaf collection equipment could accidentally vacuum off the meter lid, causing damage to your water meter or related equipment."

Residents may be responsible for water meter repair costs up to $300 if damaged.

Residents are also reminded to avoid placing leaf piles next to structures such as mailboxes, fire hydrants, and light poles. These are all hazards that can cause damage to property and leaf truck equipment.

Loose Leaf Collection Fast Facts:

  • Leaf collection season runs from November 3rd to February 26th.
  • Collection follows your regular waste pick-up schedule but may be delayed due to leaf volume or inclement weather.
  • Leaf pick-up is for leaves only – no pine needles, sticks, or other debris.
  • Keep water meters clear of leaves; residents may be responsible for water meter repair costs up to $300 if damaged.
  • Leaf piles should be placed no more than 5 feet from the curb.
  • Please keep leaves out of the streets and storm drains!
