“I Do Not Play No Rock & Roll”: “Mississippi” Fred McDowell and the Enduring Riffs that Launched a Generation of Songs
Have you ever heard of a guitarist called Bonnie Raitt? Or maybe a little band called the Rolling Stones? Did you know that these legendary artists and countless others from all over the world actually took inspiration from a musician born right down the road from Collierville?
Join the Morton Museum's Visitor Engagement and Education Coordinator, Weslea Turner, as she explores the enduring legacy of Rossville-born Blues legend "Mississippi" Fred McDowell.
We will also learn about other Blues legends like Furry Lewis, who started their careers in the Delta around Collierville and went on to impact the entire music world. Weslea will talk about the fascinating history of ethnomusicology, and how that helped the whole world to discover McDowell, Lewis, and others at the end of their lives during the 1960's Blues Revival, inspiring many of the songs we still know and love today.
